Abstract
1489464 Bilge filter V S PEDONE 5 Feb 1975 [26 July 1974] 4985/75 Heading BID [Also in Divisions B7 and F2] The bilge water from the engine room of a boat is pumped back to the surrounding water via a filter for removal of oil and comprising a housing having an inlet and an outlet and containing in series in the flow path between them, (a) fluid distribution means, (b) a first mass of particles of expanded, open-pore oleophilic and hydrophobic synthetic resin, e.g. polyurethane, (c) a second mass of such particles of a size less than that of the first mass, and (d) porous means having through passages of a size to prevent passage of the particles of the second mass. The filter may comprise alternating layers of the two masses and be designed so that it is symmetrical for use in either direction. Figure 2 shows such a filter having a moulded plastics or metal casing 19 with inlets/outlets 13, 14; foam resin sheets 21 forming the porous means; perforated baffle plates 22 forming the fluid distribution means; and alternating layers 23, 24 of the first and second masses, respectively. The filter element may be used with or without a surrounding housing. The particle size range of the first mass may be 2000-5000 microns and that of the second mass 2000 microns and below. The particles may be formed by cutting foam material to produce open-cells. The downstream side of the filter may be connected to an indicator to show when oil passes the filter upon saturation of the foam material. The indicator is suitably arranged to be visible from the outside of the boat and may comprise a transparent casing containing a material, white cotton fabric, discoloured by oil contact. A pressure relief valve may be inserted between the filter and the bilge pump to vent the pump during shut-down and start-up and a by-pass may be provided to enable discharge of bilge water without passage through the filter.
