Abstract

In a novel process for the preparation of isoeugenol, eugenol is isomerised with the aid of a catalytically active amount of a rhodium compound. The process is expediently carried out at temperatures of 25-160 DEG C, using, in particular, trivalent rhodium salts or monovalent rhodium complexes in the presence of acids as catalysts. In the case of catalysts which are sparingly soluble in eugenol, it is expedient to add a solvent. Isoeugenol has organoleptic properties and is used in the perfumes and flavourings industry. The substance is furthermore used in dentistry as a topical anaesthetic.
