Abstract
1489371 Desulphurizing of molten metal FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 25 April 1975 [30 April 1974] 18891/74 Heading C7D An apparatus for use in desulphurizing molten metals such as iron, steel, nickel or ferro alloys consists of a basic refractory lined vessel 1 divided into two chambers 3, 4 by a vertical wall 2. The first chamber 3 has a source of molten metal supply 7 above it and a top hole 6 in the base. Both chambers are covered by a hood 5 to remove gases. The dividing wall 2 may have apertures at the bottom and optionally at the top. The method of use of the apparatus in desulphurization of molten metal is by providing a desulphurizing slag in chamber 3, into which the molten metal is poured, to be collected at the base of the vessel, where it may be removed through tap hole 6. The spent slag is thus passed into chamber 4 via the apertures in the wall 2, where it is oxidized by an oxidizing agent, for example, by blowing with gaseous oxygen 8 the SO 2 gases formed passing out of the system by way of hood 5, and the oxidized slag is returned to chamber 3 for further use. The apparatus may be tilted as shown in Fig. 2 to permit the slag movement from chamber to chamber by gravity. When steels are desulphurized, at working temperatures of 14-1500‹C, the slag used may contain lime (CaO) or other alkaline earth metal oxide or alkaline metal oxide, and alumina and/or ore or more fluorides.
