Abstract

1489148 Moving band filter for molten polymer MOBIL OIL CORP 18 Feb 1976 [17 April 1975] 06478/76 Heading B1D [Also in Division B5A] Molten polymer flowing in channel 11 is filtered through sections of filter material 12 intermittently advanced across the channel, the filter materials sections being supported by a plurality of interlocking pairs of perforated breaker plates 13 mounted each side of the filter material for advancement therewith, cooling means, e.g. cooling channels 17, being provided adjacent the inlet 14 and outlet 15 of the filter assembly to the filter channel to form sealing plugs of solidified polymer at these points. Heating means 16 is provided adjacent outlet 15 to allow softening of the outlet sealing plug for filter assembly advancement. The breaker plate pass suitably having interlocking tongues 18 and consecutive plates are connected by tongues 26, these tongued joints being staggered above and below the filter material. The filter assembly is supported in the channel 11 by a slotted plate 20. The filter assembly may be advanced to present a new section of filter material to the channel by hydraulic cylinder 22 in response to a predetermined pressure differential e.g. 400 1b across the filter. The filter material may be formed by a series of sections of stainless steel screen with overlapping between adjacent sections (Fig. 5 not shown). The screen may have 12 x 64 wires per sq. in., each wire being approx. 12 thousandths of an inch in diameter such as to trap particles down to 150 microns.
