Abstract
1489066 Tank wagons GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORP 1 Oct 1974 [5 Oct 1973] 42591/74 Heading B8E A railway tank car for connection in a train of like cars comprises a tank 500 mounted on a wheeled chassis structure having couplers 80 for coupling to like cars; two conduits 520 and 520A extending from the top of the tank for fluid communication with like cars by flexible connecting conduits 560 to allow consecutive loading of fluid ladings into a train of such tank cars; two valves 530 mounted on the tank exterior and respectively connected in the conduits 520 and 520A; and a connection between the valves 530 and coupling conduit sections 525, 525A such that the sections 525 and 525A may be broken off in an accident without breaking off the valves 530 from the tank. Each conduit section 525, 525A terminates in a flange 526, 526A having cut-outs between which are six bolts 528 which pass through flange 526 or 526A, flanges 532 of valve 530 and flange 523 of tank 500. Six further bolts 528A are received in the cut-outs and pass through only flanges 532 and 523, so that the valves 530 are retained in place if the bolts 528 should be broken. Damage to the valves 530 is also resisted by respective housings 550 including thick guard plates 552 upstanding fore and aft of each valve. The valves 530 are biased to closure but may be opened either manually or pneumatically by air actuation systems 540. On completion of loading or unloading of a series of the tank cars, a support system 600 for each flexible conduit 560 may be extended to elevate conduit 560, thus effecting drainage thereof into the associated tanks, and a coupler 565 may be disconnected at a nut 568.
