Abstract

1488886 Stabilizing RAYCHEM CORP 11 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973 (2)] 44270/74 Heading C3P Irradiated cross-linked polymers susceptible to oxidation are stabilized with a minor proportion by weight of an organic phosphite of formula R<SP>1</SP>OP(OR) 2 where R<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted aliphatic or aromatic group and R is hydrogen, an optionally substituted aliphatic or aromatic group or the two R's together form a ring, provided that when one of R<SP>1</SP> and R is an aromatic or substituted aromatic group the compositions also comprise a hydroxy aromatic compound containing a sulphur atom. The polymers may be polymers or copolymers of ethylene and/or propylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or fluoride, chlorinated polyethylene or an acrylic, polyether or polyester resin, and may be in the form of shaped articles, particularly heat recoverable articles. Examples describe compositions of polyethylene, optionally mixed with ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer or with ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer and EPDM rubber, chlorinated polyethylene or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer; polymeric phosphites derived from phenol and hydrogenated Bisphenol A, di C 14 alkyl pentaerythritol diphosphite, distearyl pentaerythritol diphosphite, tripentaerythritol tetraphosphite or diisodecyl pentaerythritol diphosphite ; and optionally a sulphur containing aromatic hydroxy compound, e.g. 4,41-thiobis(6 - t.butyl - m - cresol), 4,4<SP>1</SP>-thiobis(6-t. butyl-o-cresol), a sulphur-containing hindered phenol cyanurate, 1,1<SP>1</SP>-thiobis(2-naphthol) or bis[(3,5-t.butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionyl 2- oxyethyl]sulphide.
