Abstract

1488873 Production of filter rods COURTAULDS Ltd 12 Feb 1975 [13 Feb 1974] 6467/74 Heading A2C A filter rod is produced by a process which includes the step of passing crimped cellulose acetate filaments previously treated with a plasticiser through a radio-frequency induction heating field whose direction is that same as the direction of travel of the filaments and whose frequency is in the range 10<SP>7</SP> to 3 x 10<SP>8</SP> Hertz, thereby thermally bonding the filaments. Water is added to the filaments prior to being passed into the field. The radio-frequency field is supplied by sets of opposing electrodes, opposing electrodes having the same potential and alternate electrodes having opposite potentials. Alternatively annular electrodes may be used. A plastics or ceramic tube surrounds the filaments during treatment to maintain them in a rod shape.
