1488783 Refining ferrous alloys ELECTROHEAT (PROPRIETARY) Ltd 12 Feb 1976 [05655/76] Heading C7D In a process for the removal of carbon from iron, alloy steels and ferro-alloys, especially those containing chromium and vanadium, to levels of the order of 0À05% or less, the molten super-heated metal is placed in an L.D. oxygen converter and the metal bath top blown with oxygen in the normal manner to partially remove the C from the melt using a twin-channelled converter lance, i.e. down to about 0À4%C with a Si content of about 0À1%. The melt is slagged off if necessary and hydrogen passed through one channel of the lance so that it ignites in the oxygen stream passing through the other channel to form an oxy-hydrogen flame jet, which impinges on the metal bath to the same depth as the initial oxygen jet. Up to 30% excess oxygen may be in the water vapour jet, which also may include nitrogen if required, and the melt is blown until the desired carbon content is reached. The initial oxygen blow lasts 9-10 minutes, and the water vapour blow lasts less than 15 minutes. Where the converter refractories are basic, the final blown metal may be vacuum degassed or purged with argon prior to casting, but this step is not necessary where acid refractories are used.
