Abstract

1488432 Stabilizing vessels SOUTHWESTERN INDUSTRIES Inc 5 Aug 1975 32701/75 Heading B7M A passive roll stabilizer comprises a mass 18 which is free to roll athwartships along a track defined by housing 16 and limited by deform, able end-stops 22, 24 which absorb the energy of the mass without rebound. The mass preferably has rollers 20 guided in a slot in the housing, which may be mounted at the top of a mast by means of a socket 34. The stops 22, 24 are preferably blocks of foamed plastics, e.g. polyurethane, which deform when struck by the mass, but returning gradually to their original shape in time for the next impact. A releasable latching mechanism, Fig. 4 (not shown), may be operated to lock the mass relative to the housing, and the end-stops may be in the form of hydraulic dash pots, Fig. 5 (not shown).
