Abstract

1488362 Tungsten carbide PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 1 Oct 1974 42479/74 Heading ClA Monotungsten carbide is prepared by vapor phase reaction of a tungsten compound volatile at reaction temperatures used with a vaporous source of carbon at from 1500‹ to 2500‹ C. in a reaction zone, the process comprising introducing into a reaction zone the volatile tungsten compound and the source of carbon in amounts sufficient to provide in the product at least one atom of carbon for each atom of tungsten introduced into the reaction zone and the temperature of 1500‹ to 2500‹ C. being attained by means of a plasma generator, withdrawing from the reaction zone solid tungsten carbide (as defined) product having ditungsten carbide as its principal component, and calcining the solid tungsten carbide (as defined) product in an inert atmosphere at from 500‹ C. to 1500‹ C, and for a time sufficient to produce monotungsten carbide as the principal component of the tungsten carbide product. The volatile tungsten compound is preferably a halide, e.g. its hexachloride, and the source of carbon selected from hydrocarbons or halogenated hydrocarbons.
