Abstract

1488227 Olefins by two-stage cracking of oil DOW CHEMICAL CO 5 Feb 1976 04579/76 Heading C5E Ethylene and propylene are produced by a two-stage process comprising (a) hydrocracking an oil fraction boiling in the range 200-1000‹ F. with a highly active sulphided hydrocracking catalyst, with 4-60 moles H 2 per mole feed, at 300-565‹ C. and a pressure greater than 400 p.s.i.g., and with a residence time of 1-180 seconds so as to produce a C 2 -C 5 product in a yield of 74-96% and to achieve a normal paraffin : iso-paraffin ratio greater than 3 : 1 in the C 2 -C 5 portion of the product and (6) thermally cracking the hydrocracked product to give ethylene and propylene. The thermal cracking may be carried out at 800-925‹ C., 10-30 p.s.i.g., with a residence time of 0À1-1 second and a steam/hydrocarbon wt. ratio of 0À1-1 : 1.
