Abstract
1488174 Carrying conductors through partitions WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 2 Jan 1975 [10 Jan 1974 3 April 1974 25 Sept 1974] 37/75 Heading H2E An assembly for bringing conductors through a nuclear containment vessel comprises a metallic enclosure 26, two axially aligned annular shrouds 34 within the enclosure each sealed at one end to the inner surface of the enclosure and at the other end having an exterior surface 48 spaced from and parallel to the said inner surface, at least one conductor 18 extending through the shrouds and the enclosure, and a compressive setting resinous potting material 38 filling the enclosure axially beyond the shrouds and forming a compression seal around the conductor and the exterior surface 48. The stainless steel enclosure 26 includes an annular header 28 with external 0-ring grooves 30 and an aperture 32. The shrouds 34 are welded at enlarged diameter end portions 35 to the header 28. Two spaced insulating paper-resin discs 42 are force-fitted within the header on either side of the aperture 32. Compression setting resin 38 is applied as far as the line 51 and on setting this shrinks against the conductor 18 and the surface 48. Additional similar or a cheaper resin 53 is applied. The aperture 32 is connected to a leak monitoring means (not shown). In another embodiment a single insulating disc (60, Fig. 3) with no leak monitoring aperture is employed and a glass fibre mesh (38a, Fig. 5) may be wrapped over the ends of the shrouds. Alternatively the shrouds (72 or 40a, Figs. 4 or 6) are welded to a respective end member (68 or 42a) which are welded to close each end of the enclosure; the inner ends of the shrouds (40a) may be covered with a glass fibre mesh (43a) and the compression setting resin is applied through an aperture (66 or 54a) to form two separate castings one about each shroud and the separation include the leak monitoring aperture and be filled with sulphur hexafluoride (Fig. 8). A spiral leak-monitoring passage (36b, Fig.) may run between the conductor and the enclosure.
