Abstract

1487868 Controlling A.C. LICENTIA PATENT VERWALTUNGS GmbH 21 Feb 1975 [23 Feb 1974] 7390/75 Heading H2H Apparatus for controlling A.C. from a source N to a load V comprises first and second pairs P1, P2; P1<SP>1</SP>, P2<SP>1</SP> of back-to-back thyristors each connected in series with the load V, the first part being connected directly with the source line R and the second being connected with a line R<SP>1</SP> to which is applied a voltage which is derived from the source N, is in phase therewith and is of a lower amplitude, this second pair of thyristors P1<SP>1</SP>, P2<SP>1</SP> each having a diode n 1 , n 2 in series therewith poled in the same sense as the respective thyristor, the junctions between each diode, thyristor pair being connected via respective capacitor, inductor links C1, L1; C2, L2, to the input line R. In operation during, e.g. a positive supply ¢-cycle, thyristor P1 is fired initially to connect the voltage at R to the load. At an appropriate time in the first half of the ¢-cycle, thyristor P1<SP>1</SP> is fired to quench thyristor P1 using the commutating circuit C1, L1, thyristor P2 being fired to limit the load current if necessary during commutation, thyristor P1<SP>1</SP> remaining on after the commutation is complete to connect the lower voltage R<SP>1</SP> to the load V. Reverse commutation may take place later in the ¢-cycle.
