Abstract

1487056 Sight glass for pressure vessels; seals C E MEGINNIS 9 April 1976 14583/76 Headings F2P and F2B A sight glass assembly for an opening 18 in a vessel 19 comprises a housing 10 having an opening 17 for registration with the vessel opening, the opening having a frusto-conically shaped wall 25; means (bolts 21) for mounting the housing on the vessel; an annular lens holder 11 mounted in the housing 10 and a lens 14 mounted in the lens holder, the holder 11 having a collet portion 26 including a plurality of circumferentially spaced fingers 32 in camming relation with the frusto-conically shaped wall 25 of the housing 10 whereby the fingers 32 may be cammed inwardly towards the lens to place the periphery of the lens in radial compression. Preferably a liner 13 of non-rigid material, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, is interposed between the periphery of the lens and the lens holder, the material of the liner being impervious to any corrosive effects of fluid within the vessel. Cushioning gaskets 15, 16 may be provided between the lens 14 and shoulder 24 of housing 10. In the embodiment shown the collet portion 26 of lens holder 11 is press-fitted into the housing 10 to urge the fingers 32 into camming relation with frustoconically shaped wall 25 of the housing but in another embodiment (Figs. 4-5, not shown) the lens holder is screwed into the housing.
