Abstract
1486664 Polyimides BASF AG 23 Jan 1975 [24 Jan 1974] 2926/75 Heading C3R Polyamide-acids convertible to heat-resistant polyimides are reaction products of a dianhydride comprising pyromellitic and 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>- benzophenonetetraoic dianhydride and primary aromatic diamines of which 1 to 25 mol. per cent is 3,3<SP>1</SP>-dicarboxy-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenylmethane. Other diacids which may be additionally used and aromatic diamines which constitute the balance of the diamine reactant are specified. The polymer may have an intrinsic vicosity of 0À1 to 3À0 dl./g. (0À5 g./dl. solution at 30‹ C. in N-methylpyrrolidone for the amide acid and in H 2 SO 4 for the imides). They may be prepared by reaction in polar solvents and the solution used for wire coatings, films, fibres, moulding compositions impregnants and adhesives. The polymers may be blended with reinforcing materials, e.g. glass mats or glass, metal or graphite fibres. Specific examples illustrate the use of pyromellitic alone and a mixture of both anhydrides; in both the balance of the diamine is 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl ether. Comparative examples show that the storage stability of the polymer is much greater than that of analogous polymer wherein 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl ether is the sole diamine.
