Abstract

1486524 Multi-spindle machine tool turrets GEOMETRIC MACHINE TOOLS (EEC) Ltd 5 April 1976 [23 May 1975] 22903/75 Headings B3C B3K B3B and B3N A multi-spindle machine tool, e.g. for milling, drilling, boring or tapping, has a rotatable turret comprising an indexing plate 11 which supports a plurality of tool spindles 20, 21 attached to the front of the plate, as shown by means of housings 19. Each spindle housing 19 on the plate may include one or more spindles which may be inclined to one another, see Fig. 1. When a spindle housing is in the working position, gear 23 on one of the spindles meshes with drive gear train 24 on supporting head or slide 10 which also supports plate 11. The gear train 24 is selectively driven via alternative transmissions 27 and selector clutches 26 by motor 25. The plate 11 is held in the indexed position by interengaging face gears 15 but is releasable for indexing by a fluid pressure actuator 16 which moves the plate forwardly. The plate is returned after indexing by spring 18. Rotation of the plate is provided by drive motor 13 through chain drive 14. Transducer 17 linked to the machine control system detects the angular indexing movement of the plate for control purposes. Tools 36 may be retained in spindles 20 by externally actuable draw bolts 28. The head or slide 10 is displaceable vertically on column 31 by lead screw 35. The workpiece is mountable on cross-slide arrangement 32-34.
