Abstract

1486435 Removing acid mist from waste gases CARL STILL 1 Nov 1974 [3 Nov 1973] 47382/74 Heading BIT [Also in Division Cl] Sulphuric acid mist is recovered from waste gases produced by wet-catalysis plant, wherein hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen cyanide are burned in the presence of ammonia to make sulphur trioxide which is then absorbed into sulphuric acid, by first cooling the waste gases by mixing therewith a quantity of air whose volume is 10-50% that of the waste gases, then passing the mixture through a mechanical separator 2 in the form of a quartz wool filter. The cooling coalesces the acid mist which drains off through outlets 15, 16. Air inlet 10 and waste gas inlet 9 are arranged to enable the air and gas to mix between 1 and 5 seconds before reaching separator 2.
