Abstract

Stencils for copying documents, type-written matter, drawings &c. are prepared by modifying the process described in Specifications 115,593 and 127,106, in which stencils are produced on Yoshino or like paper, or on bolting cloth, by the employment of a photographic process of the kind in which a film of bichromated gelatine, or bitumen, is exposed and developed by a solvent liquid, the film being placed directly on the Yoshino paper &c. or on a temporary backing from which it is transferred thereto. According to the present invention, exposures taken through a screen formed with dots, lines, or recticulations, are made en the sensitized films in addition to the direct exposures to an image of the matter to be copied, or exposures behind photographic plates prepared from this matter, so that what otherwise would be the unexposed portions of the film are broken up and solid dots &c. are formed in these portions of the films, so that when the finished film is used to produce a print undue spreading of the ink is prevented, the spreading that does occur being taken up by the portions corresponding to dots &c. Photographic plates subjected to separate exposures of the matter to be copied, and of a screen, may be used in the preparation of the film; or a sensitized plate which is to form a positive from which the stencil is produced, is exposed behind a negative of the matter to be reproduced, and behind a lined, dotted &c. screen.
