Abstract
1485753 Cationic polymers ALLIED COLLOIDS Ltd 27 Sept 1974 [27 June 1973] 30686/73 Heading C3P A process for the preparation of an aqueous solution of a water-soluble cationic polymer, which dries to a water insoluble film comprises copolymerizing in an inert atmosphere a monomer mixture consisting of a compound of Formula (1) (preferably at least 70% by weight) wherein R 1 is hydrogen or a methyl radical; R 2 is an alkylene group of 1-4 carbon atoms; R 3 , R 4 , R 5 are independently C 1-4 alkyl, and X is CH 3 SO 4 or halide and a compound of Formula (2) (preferably 1-30% by weight) the copolymerization being initiated by a redox system at not greater than 30‹ C. The copolymerization may be effected in aqueous solution under nitrogen with an Fe(II)-ammonium persulphate redox system at pH 5À0, in the optional presence of a chain transfer agent. 0À5 -10 moles of formaldehyde per mole of (2) may be added as a shelf-life extender, and the composition, or the copolymer solution are used to coat textiles or paper. In Example (1), diethylaminoethyl acrylate quaternized with methyl chloride was copolymerized with N- methylol acrylamide in the presence of thioglycollic acid and a redox system. The polymer solution was dried to a film in Example (2), coated on to paper and dried in Example (3), and formaldehyde was added in Example (4), and the shelf-life determined.
