Abstract

1485375 Degrading chlorinated hydrocarbons NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 20 Nov 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 54099/73 A process for the degradation of a chlorinated hydrocarbon into HCl and CO 2 comprises flamelessly burning a fuel which is H 2 or a hydrocarbon containing at least 2 carbon atoms in a catalyst bed comprising Rh, Pd, Ir or Pt metal or compound thereof and passing the chlorinated hydrocarbon into the catalyst bed in which the fuel is burning. The catalyst is preferably supported on alumina, silica or mixtures thereof and the supported catalyst suitably contains 0À2-2À0% of the metal or compound. The catalyst bed may also include 1 to 15% copper oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt oxide or manganese oxide. The fuel is preferably propane and/or butane. In a preferred embodiment, the catalyst bed 3 is supported on a plug of alumina 2 in a T-shaped reactor 1. A stream of fuel vapour 8 together with air 7 or other source of O 2 is passed through the catalyst bed 3, and ignited. Initially the fuel burns with a flame but soon "lights back" into the catalyst bed and burns flamelessly. When flameless burning has been established the chlorinated hydrocarbon is introduced through inlet 7. The maximum temperature in the catalyst bed is preferably 400-500‹ C. The gases leaving the bed are passed through a Dreschel bottle containing water to remove HCl and CO 2 may be vented into the atmosphere.
