Abstract

1485361 Coated products P GOODWIN 5 Aug 1974 [14 May 1973] 22751/73 Heading B2E A multi-layer structure in longitudinal form comprises an outer enveloping layer of protective material and at least one inner strengthening member, the strengthening member having perforations such that during formation of the protective layer a continuity of protective material through the perforations to form a link between the enveloping layer on opposing sides of the member occurs the structure in transverse section comprising a part of relative thickness adjacent to a part of relative thickness adjacent to a part of relative thinness which latter part is formed substantially from the perforated strengthening member enveloped by the layer of protective material of thinness such that perforations of the strengthening member are indicated by corresponding indentations in at least one surface of the protective layer. The strengthening member may be in the form of a strip material which may be flat or contoured. More than one strengthening member may be used arranged in multi-layer form or in a series of adjacent or contiguous strips or any combination of these. The strengthening member may be in tubular form and more than one tube may be arranged concentrically, in layers, side by side or any combination of these. The strengthening member may be of any stiff or rigid material such as wood, plastics, metal, ceramic and glass ceramic. The structure may be obtained by extrusion of the protective material. In the figure a protective strip 1 comprises an outer layer 2 of resilient protective material with a perforated inner strengthening member 3. The strip has an outer facing protecting surface 4 and a rearward facing surface, 5. The outer facing is profiled to provide a longitudinal recess 6 with indentations 8 located therein and in which recess, screws (not shown) secure the strip to a surface may be inserted through the indentations in the surface, the member 3, the rear surface and thence into the surface to be protected.
