Abstract

1485077 Hydraulic presses GULF & WESTERN MFG CO 29 Aug 1975 [11 Oct 1974 (2)] 35752/75 Heading B5F [Also in Division F2] In a pressure relief valve for an overload protection system of a press, the chambers 148, 182 at opposite ends of a spool valve element 188 are normally at equal pressure but on press overload pressure in chamber 182 rises relative to that in chamber 148 so that the spool moves to the left to connect chamber 148 to a drain port 150 via valve surfaces 162, 154. Thereafter the excess pressure in chamber 182 accelerates the spool movement so that cylindrical portion 174 moves out of bore 158 to connect the chamber 182 to the drain port 150 and relieves the pressure in a piston-cylinder device of the press. The spool has a central square portion with rounded movement-guiding corners between which flows takes place from the chamber 148 to the drain port 150. This flow is throttled by a surface 176 on the spool to damp the movement of the spool towards the end of its movement to the left. The two chambers are supplied with pressure by a pump and are interconnected by a check valve. In a modification two dump valves are arranged in series between the chamber 182 and the piston-cylinder of the press, both valves allowing a restricted flow to the piston-cylinder.
