Abstract

1485052 Coatings FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 2 Sept 1974 [31 Aug 1973 8 Jan 1974 26 Aug 1974] 38312/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates, in particular vapour-deposited metal surfaces, are provided with protective coatings from compositions comprising as binder (a) 90-10 parts by weight of a saturated thermoplastic vinyl polymer derived from at least 85% by weight of one or more monovinyl monomers which are free from reactive groups such as -OH, -COOH and -CONH 2 , the polymer having a number average molecular weight of 2000 to 250,000; and (b) 10-90 parts by weight of vinyl monomer solvent comprising 0-90% by weight of one or more monovinyl monomers and 10-100% of one or more divinyl, trivinyl and/or tetra vinyl monomers. (The term "vinyl" is defined as representing -CH=CH 2 and -C(CH 3 )=CH 2 and excluding allylic compounds). The compositions may optionally include pigments, fillers, plasticisers, polymerisation catalysts (e.g. photoinitiators), and volatile solvents. Curing of applied coatings is suitably effected with UV light or ionising radiation, e.g. electron beams. Application may be by such methods as brushing, spraying, roller coating and flow coating. In the vapour-deposited metal surfaces to which the coatings may be applied, the metal may be aluminium, antimony or chromium-iron alloy. The metal may be deposited on a base coat of a synthetic resin or rubber composition, e.g. a radiation curable composition similar to the coating of the invention. The coated products are useful as substitutes for metal-plated materials used for the trim or brightwork of automobiles. In Examples component (a) of the coating composition is a methyl methacrylate homopolymer or copolymer and component (b) is a polv (meth) acrylate ester of a glycol, trimethylolpropane or pentaerythritol, generally in admixture with a mono (meth) acrylate ester.
