Abstract

1485001 Collapsible steering columns CAM GEARS Ltd 22 Aug 1974 [22 Aug 1973] 39769/73 Heading B7H A collapsible steering column includes telescopically interengaged steering wheel and steering gears parts which entirely define a pressure chamber the parts being telescoped either by occupant impact at the steering wheel or by the steering wheel part being fired forwardly by an explosive or by pressurized gas within the pressure chamber. The steering wheel part 1 has a piston 7 mounted in a tubular part of the steering gear part 11, the parts 1, 11 defining chambers 19, 29, 33. Chamber 19 contains a damping fluid and has a plugged outlet 43; chamber 33 contains an explosive or is connected to a gas source and is joined by passages 31 to the chamber 29. If an occupant is thrown against the steering wheel a frangible pin 25 between parts 1, 11 shears and the column telescopes. The explosive or gas source actuators are included in an electrical circuit including a deceleration/collision sensor and a vehicle seat belt, if collision occurs whilst the seat belt is done up the explosive or gas source is actuated and the gases entering chamber 29 force the piston 7 forwardly.
