1484780 Data transmission; common channel systems BURROUGHS CORP 13 Jan 1975 [4 Feb 1974] 1331/75 Heading H4P [Also in Division G4] In a data communication system, a plurality of terminals are connected (e.g. in a loop) to a central station which generates message blocks each including a terminal address, the address in one block being randomly selected and being incremented to form the addresses in precessive blocks. As disclosed, each block also includes two frames for synchronizing and conditioning the addressed terminal for data transfer, and a data interval. On recognizing its address, a terminal loads the data interval in the block from a buffer within itself to send to a buffer at the central station, or loads its buffer from the data interval with data from the central station. The loop may be a cable TV line. As a mcdification, only active terminals need be addressed, these being determined by a periodically-performed sampling poll or by picking up an indication during a regular poll.
