Abstract

1484726 Operating mechanisms for angularly movable panels TELEFLEX MORSE Ltd 10 July 1975 [18 July 1974 7 March 1975] 31961/74 and 9675/75 Heading E2M A mechanism for moving panels mounted for angular movement (in particular top and bottom hung windows) comprises: a chaincase 1 for mounting with respect to a fixed frame and containing a sprocket 19 and a stored drive chain 2 which connects to the panel, a drive box 4, which is secured to the inside of the frame and which releasably receives the chaincase, containing a wheel 25 driven by a cable 34 and connected to drive, directly (as shown) or indirectly via gearing, the sprocket 19; the chaincase 1 being mountable on the drive box 4 in four different positions: as shown in Fig. 9 for a top hung panel, extending to the other side to allow cable 34 to enter from the right (Fig. 8 not shown), and extending to either side in an upside down position for use with bottom hung panels (Figs. 10, 11 not shown). The cable 34 has a helically wound inner 32 which engages teeth on wheel 25 to turn member 21 connected to sprocket 19 via coupling member 29 which engages grooves in each member to allow incremental adjustment to be made between them before they are locked together. The member 21 can engage in either open end of the sprocket. Bolts pass through holes HI, H2 in the chaincase and through one of alternate sets A1, A2, B1, B2, Cl, C2, Dl, D2 in the drive box 4 (Fig. 7), and the drive box is bored to allow the cable 34 to enter from either side. The chaincase shown is formed of upper and lower die-cast sections 5, 6 and an extruded aluminium portion 9 which receives the coiled chain. As previously stated the components can be mounted so that section 9 extends to the left or the chaincase can be turned upside down in either position of the section 9 so that chain 2 issues from the opposite side of the chaincase. In another embodiment (Figs. 12-18, not shown) section 9 is integral with the rest of the chaincase and the whole is closed by a flat upper plate-more coils of chain being accommodated. The holes H1 and H2 are equidistant from the centre of sprocket 19 and arranged so that only two holes in the drive box are needed to align with the holes H1, H2 in all four positions. The cable 34 can be connected to a manual or electric drive.
