1484462 Educational appliances DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 4 Feb 1975 [4 Feb 1974] 5096/74 Heading G5G A teaching aid comprises schematic functional representations of the apparatus it is required to teach, the representations being provided with pre-programmable fault location points, associated with fibre optic light guides, each of which is capable of being interrogated, the aid exhibiting either fault or no fault conditions subsequent to interrogation of a fault location point. As shown, a block diagram showing simulated processing stages 2, 3, 4, 5 is drawn on a mimic sheet mounted on a board provided with a matrix of test fault location points some of which correspond to test points in the form of holes 7, 8, 9, 10 provided in the mimic sheet; a number of such sheets representing different pieces of equipment may be used with a single board. Each fault location point on the board comprises a brass ferrule containing one end of a fibre optic light guide; interrogation is effected by touching a ferrule with an electrically energized probe, whereby a circuit is completed to light a lamp at the other end of the guide. Dual aspect red/green filters are located between the lamp and its associated guide, and interchangeable masks inserted into the light mountings at the back of the board set up a programmed red or green light pattern indicating fault or nofault conditions. Logic circuits associated with each mask record the identity of each test point interrogated, e.g. on to a tape printer or computer, and also provide addresses for random access devices, e.g. a slide projector which is actuated to project slides containing information appropriate to the faults under consideration. The light indications may be supplemented by meter readings and electronic waveform identifications, and the aid may be used in conjunction with photographs and a three dimensional model of the apparatus under consideration.
