Abstract

1484065 Connectors for joining articles STEELCASE Inc 21 Oct 1974 45499/74 Heading F2M [Also in Division E2] Articles such as room partition panels 40 are connected together by mating male and female connectors 10, 12 shown secured to the top edges of the panels by 44 passing through apertures 12 in the connectors, the male conector comprising an elongated body member 11 having upper and lower surfaces and a flange 13 extending from one end of that member in the longitudinal direction of the member 11 with a surface coplaner with the lower surface of the member and a tapered boss 16 extending upwardly from the flange and the female connector comprising an elongated body member 21 with a flange 23 extending from one end of that member in the longitudinal direction of the member 21 and having a tapered opening 26 for receiving the boss 16, preferably so that each of the upper and lower surfaces of the connectors are aligned. Preferably each male connector has a second similarly disposed boss 18 which seats in a second tapered opening 28 in each female connector which is also provided with a second apertured flange 31 having its top surface flush with that of the connector body. Three panels can be joined together as shown in Fig. 10 using one male and two female connectors with their flanges 13, 23, 31 superposed as shown in Fig. 11, a threaded bolt being tightened in a threaded hole in the boss 16. Two aligned panels may be connected by either a single male or a single female connector and two pairs of such panels may be secured at right angles by engaging the boss 18 on the male connector with the opening 28 on the female connector, a bolt 38 securing them together by engaging in a threaded hole in the boss 18 (see Figs. 12, 13, not shown). In a further arrangement three panels are assembled in T-formation, opening 26 receiving boss 18 (Fig. 14, not shown). Each of the connectors is received in a channel formed near the end of a top edge of the panel (Fig. 9, not shown) or in a separate channel member 50 (Fig. 16, not shown) secured to the bottom of the panel. For joining furniture panels, e.g. a desk "leg" panel to a desk top, the interior of the leg panel is provided with brackets to receive the connectors (Fig. 17, not shown).
