1484015 Coated products IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [26 Oct 1973 11 Feb 1976] 49898/73 and 06175/74 Addition to 1402414 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] An electrode for electrochemical processes e.g. anode in mercury cathode cell electrolyzing alkali metal chloride solution, fuel cell electrocatalysis, electrosynthesis and cathodic protection comprises a film-forming metal (Ti, Ta, Zr, Nb, W) or alloy support coated with an electrocatalytic, conducting matrix in which is embedded a non-conducting particulate or fibrous refractory material selected from oxides (other than those claimed and/or described in specification 1402414) e.g. Ce or Hf oxide, Ta 2 O 5 , Mg or Ca aluminate (spinel), Zr or Ca silicate (bellite), Ca titanate (perovskite) or zirconate, attapulgite, kaolinite, asbestos, mica, cordierite or bentonite; carbides; sulphides e.g. Ce 2 S 3 ; nitrides e.g. of B or Si; and fluorides e.g. CaF 2 . The refractory material is preferably a mixture of ZrSiO 4 particles and ZrO 2 fibres. Particles may be in the size range 0.05 to 200 microns; fibres may be up to 1 mm length. The matrix may comprise at least one Pt group metal and/or oxide with or without non-noble metal (e.g. Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, W, Sn, Ge or Sb) oxide, e.g. (a) RuO 2 and 50 to 75% TiO 2 , or (b) a mixture of 27 to 45% RuO 2 , 26 to 50% TiO 2 and 5 to 48% SnO 2 . A chlorine discharge catalyst e.g. MnF 2 may be admixed in a matrix of SnO 2 , GeO 2 and/or Sb oxide. The coating may be formed on the cleaned and/or etched surface of the support by spraying thereon at least one layer of a paint composition comprising thermally-decomposable compounds of each metal to feature in the finished coating in a liquid vehicle, e.g. RuCl 3 dissolved in n-pentanol with tetra n-butyl orthotitanate, drying the paint layer by evaporating the vehicle and firing at 250 to 800‹C to form the matrix, e.g. of Ru+TiO 2 . The refractory particles or fibres, e.g. ZrSiO 4 may be mixed into the paint composition before applying or whilst still in fluid state on the support surface. A plurality of layers may be applied, each dried and fired as above. Specifications 1445331, 1425934 and 1360197 are referred to.
