Abstract

1483904 Overbased materials; lubricants; fuels LUBRIZOL CORP 27 Sept 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 42156/74 Headings C4X C5F and C5G An ocerbased material is made by first carbonating a mixture of a lower alkanol (up to decanol) with a basic compound of barium in an equivalent ratio of 1 : 1 to 100 : 1 and then mixing the product with a stabilizing agent in the presence of an inert organic liquid diluent in an equivalent ratio (barium to stabilizing agent) of 1 : 10 to 10 : 1. The stabilizing agent is a carboxylic acid containing at least 50 aliphatic carbon atoms or an anhydride, ester, amide, imide, amidine or metal salt of such an acid or a mixture of two or more such acids or derivatives. The preferred stabilizing agent is produced by reacting a polyolefine-substituted succinic acid or anyhdride with an ethylene polyamine. The barium compound is preferably the oxide or hydroxide, but may be a sulphide, hydrosulphide or alkoxide. The diluent may be a synthetic or natural lubricating oil, kerosine, naphtha, or diesel fuel, aromatic hydrocarbons or halohydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, ketones or ethers, or mixtures of these. An oilsoluble phenol or phenate may be present during the second step, e.g. an alkyl-phenol, a phenolformaldehyde condensation product or a phenol sulphide. Solids may be removed from the product by filtration and volatiles by distillation. Lubricating and fuel compositions comprise a major proportion of lubricating oil or liquid fuel respectively and a minor proportion of the overbased material. The lubricating oils may be used in spark-ignition or compressionignition engines, including two-stroke engines, aviation piston engines and marine and lowload Diesel engines, but also as automatic transmission fluids, axle lubricants, gear lubricants, metal-working lubricants, hydraulic fluids and greases. The base oil may be animal, vegetable, mineral or synthetic, and other additives may also be present.
