Abstract

1483794 Bounce crimping yarn CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 23 Dec 1974 [28 Dec 1973 (2)] 55607/74 Heading D1F A bounce crimping apparatus for texturising multifilament thermoplastic yarn having a yarn texturising chamber 22 having an inlet 140, a fluid outlet 166 aligned longitudinally with said inlet, a lateral yarn outlet 168, a foraminous surface 162 positioned across the fluid outlet against which the yarn is hurled by heated steam introduced via plenum chamber 142 to axially compress and crimp the yarn filaments and rebound them through the outlet, and means 28 for collecting the crimped yarn free from tension is characterised by a means 174 connected to lateral outlet 168 for conveying the crimped yarn to the collector 28 and continuously axially compacting the yarn. As shown collector 28 is a J box and means 174 is a tube having an internal cross sectional area 1¢ to 2 times the area of the outlet as defined by arch 178, Fig. 10, and a diameter slightly greater than the largest dimension of the outlet from chamber 22. This prevents buckling of the yarn. Tube 174 bends through 90‹ to direct the yarn to the J box, the bend serving to axially compress the yarn. Further axial compression is provided by a weak leaf spring 190 near the J box end of the tube. The J box has a cross-section of 0.5 to 0.9 in<SP>2</SP> per 100 deniers of yarn to prevent the toppling over of a pile of yarn (Figs. 2A-2C, not shown) as happens in larger diameter J boxes. The yarn is first heated in section 30 then cooled in section 32 of the J box as it passes through in an untensioned condition to heat set the crimps. Steam is passed into the plenum chamber formed by housing 102 and the concentric wall (104, Fig. 6) of the J box and passes through apertures 110, 112 to heat the yarn. Similarly ambient air is passed to plenum chamber (124, Fig. 7) formed by housing 120 and passes through apertures 128 to cool the yarn. The heating and cooling sections are of substantially the same diameter and are free from obstructions. Yarn movement, tangle removing. Yarn 12 is fed from a supply package to driven godet roll 16 and separator roll 14 then to godet 20 and separator 18, the latter rolls rotating faster to draw the yarn which may be heated by godets 16, 20. The yarn is then bounce crimped at 22 and passed to J box 28 as described. The heat set texturised yarn is drawn over baffle 48 and through an eyelet 50 to remove gross tangles. Tension vanes 52, 54, 56, 58 comprising thin metal sheets pivoted at hinges 60, 62, 64, 66 pinch the advancing yarn gently to further remove tangles. The yarn is pulled over idler rolls 34, 36, 38 and godet rolls 40, 42 and wound up in package 46. When the yarn piles up in J tube 28 above light source 132 light is not received by sensor (134, Fig. 8, not shown) and the rate of rotation of godet rolls 40, 42 is slowed until the volume of yarn decreases and light is received by sensor (134).
