Abstract

1483734 Making punch and die sets; electroerosion; punching LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 31 Oct 1974 [9 Nov 1973] 52020/73 Headings B3A B3V and B3W A method of producing punch and die components of a punch and die set comprises machining one of the components of the set with a required profile and at least two location holes, machining an electrode 18, Fig. 1, with an identically shaped profile to that of the component with at least two location holes, mounting the electrode on a platen 11 of a jig machining at least two location holes in a metal block 20 and mounting the block on an oppositely disposed platen 10, and spark eroding the metal block with the electrode as a cathode to the anode of the block to form a complementary component of the set. The electrode and component, e.g. a die, are machined using a copper wire spark erosion cutter controlled by a numerical control system programmed to reproduce a given profile in a plurality of blanks. Locating holes 19, 23 are machined respectively in the electrode and block for receiving dowels 16a, 14a which can be located in holes 15a, 13 of the platens. The electrode can also be clamped by clamps 17. The punch component 20 is spark eroded from the block as the platen 10 is lowered. Respective bolsters 70, 74, Fig. 3, for the die and punch are then accurately machined, using a numerical control system, with locating holes and pillar guide holes. The die bolster is then rigidly mounted on pillars 32 of a forming machine and the punch bolster is slidably mounted on the pillars. Both bolsters are mounted on respective platens 30, 31 of the machine. In operation, a metal blank 57 is trapped between a hold-down 51 and the die 33 upon downward movement of the punches 41,42 mounted on the upper platen. After punching the blank at a postion (A), Fig. 4 (not shown), the blank is moved to a position (B). Alternatively, metal strip may be punched sequentially upon passing between guides 60 disposed on platen 30.
