Abstract

1483645 Coupling ships; tugs D B WALLER and R A FORKER 12 Aug 1974 35391/74 Headings B7A and B7S An ocean going tug and barge unit comprises a barge 1 with a notch 7 in the stern, and a tug 3 of the same general shape as the notch, and a cantilevered guide 15 adapted to fit in a recess 19 on the bow of the tug. When the vessels are to be coupled, the tug is driven up a ramp 7a of the barge until it rests below the guide 15. Draw racks 31 on the barge are then used to pull the tug home, and wedges 33 are pushed into recesses 43 on the tug to push the tug into contact with notch overhangs 35. The wedges 33 are also tapered laterally, Fig. 5, not shown. In Figs. 6, 7 and 8, not shown, a cantilevered guide (115) is disposed on the tug bow and enters a recess (119) on the barge.
