Abstract
148,360. Daimler-Motoren-Ges. May 31, 1915, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Propelling.-Aircraft fitted with engines or groups of engines arranged outside the median plane have the engines controlled simultaneously in the same or opposite directions by different movements of the same lever. The connexions to the lever may be adjustable to enable individual engines to be controlled independently. Figs. 5 and 6 show a device for controlling the carburettors 5, 6, 7, 8 of four engines arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the fuselage and driving two propellers. The carburettor levers are connected by tension members 10, 21, 9, 22 to levers 26, 24, 25, 23 mounted respectively on the ends of a rod 31 and concentric tubes 32, 33, 34. The outer tube 34 can turn in a sleeve 14 pivoted about a transverse axis 15, and a handwheel 13 is rotatably mounted on the tube 34. Each of the concentric members 31, 32, 33, 34 is provided with a lever at its upper end which is normally locked to a toothed ring 35 on the wheel 13. Springs keep the members 9, 10, 21, 22 in tension. Rotary movement of the wheel 13 moves the levers of the carburettors 5, 6 in the opposite direction to those of the carburettors 7, 8, and rocking movement about the axis 15 adjusts all four carburettors in the same direction. Separate adjustment of the carburettors is effected by the levers at the upper ends of the members 31-34. A modification is described for controlling four carburettors without the independent adjustment, the four concentric members being replaced by a single member, and the levers 23, 24, 25, 26 by a double-armed lever. A modification is described for controlling two engines driving propellers on the two sides of the fuselage, and a third engine and propeller at the front of the fuselage. In this case, the carburettor of the third engine is connected to a sleeve on the control lever so that the lateral engines can be adjusted oppositely by a rotary movement of the lever without affecting the central engine, but all three engines are adjusted simultaneously in the same direction by rocking-movements of the lever.
