Abstract

1483177 Fire escape apparatus; climbing aid W J LOWE J M TRANFIELD and W J SENIOR 19 Sept 1974 [23 June 1973] 29945/73 Headings A5A and A6M [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A device for lowering masses, down a rope or cable, e.g. in a personal fire escape or mountain rescue, comprises a housing formed from two planar plates 5, 6 fixed together in spaced relationship, a cable inlet 7 between two pins 8, 9, a rotatable drum 10 between the plates and a cable outlet comprising a fixed jaw 13 which contacts the cable 12 at surface 20 and a pivoted (about 17) jaw 14 which contacts the cable at surface 21, the mass to be lowered being attached to an extension 18 of jaw 14 at holes 19. The greater the mass, the greater the force applied to the cable 12 by the jaws, thus keeping the rate of descent for different masses constant. Different rates of descent may be obtained by attaching the mass at different holes 19.
