Abstract
1482874 Surface treating aluminium extrusions; electro-phoretic deposition KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd and FUJI SASHI INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 April 1975 [2 May 1974 (2) 8 May 1974 (2) 24 July 1974 29 July 1974] 17913/75 Headings C7B and C7U A process for surface protecting Al and Al alloy extrusions comprises extruding the Al or Al alloy, cooling the extrusion, reforming by rolling,' cutting the reformed extrusion and coating with an aqueous solution or dispersion containing at least one of the salts of silicic acid, boric acid, phosphoric acid, molybdic acid, vanadic acid, permanganic acid, tungstic acid, stannic acid and chromic acid and then heat-treating. Extrusion may be effected at 400‹-500‹C at 15-80m/min. and cooling to no higher than 100‹C by liquid N 2 , water or air. The reforming by rolling is preferably effected under N 2 and the coating solution or dispersion preferably containing 5-60 wt. per cent of the oxyacid salt is applied by spraying, electrostatic spraying, immersion or electro-phoresis. Heattreatment is then carried out at 200-230‹C. Prior to coating, the cut extrusion may be treated in water or steam to form a boehmite layer or in a solution to form a chemical conversion coating such as a phosphate, chromate, silicate or oxide. A final organic coating e.g. of a natural or synthetic resin, preferably containing 0À1-10% of one of the specified oxyacid salts may then be applied by brushing, spraying, electrostatic spraying or electrophoresis. Numerous examples of both coating materials are specified.
