Abstract
1482815 Energizing circuits for electromagnets G KROMSCHRODER AG 25 Oct 1974 [25 Oct 1973 25 April 1974] 46222/74 Heading H2H [Also in Division H3] An electromagnet is supplied from a full wave rectifier connected to an A.C. source through a bidirectional switching element that first conducts for a greater part of the A.C. half cycles to provide a pull-in current and after a time conducts for a lesser part of the A.C. half cycles to provide a holding current. As described a valve-operating solenoid 1 is connected by a bridge rectifier 2, 3, 4, 5 to a triac 7. When A.C. is first applied to terminals 6, 8 each half cycle is almost completely passed by triac 7 because the voltage applied to the trigger diode 11 rapidly reaches the trigger level thereof. After a time determined by timer 11 an electronic or mechanical switch 17 closes and capacitor 16 delays the triggering of diode 11 to a later point in the half cycles reducing the mean current through triac 7 to the holding value of electromagnet 1. Instead of simply timing, circuit 18 may respond to electromagnet current or field strength or movement of the armature. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) capacitor 16 is permanently connected to trigger diode 11 and the timer contact shunts resistor 10 during the initial high current phase of operation. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), capacitor 16 is shunted by a transistor which is initially off but after a time determined by a resistor-capacitor circuit conducts to reduce the charging current to capacitor 16 and hence delay the triggering of diode 11.
