Abstract

1482252 Polymers of unsaturated amidosulphonate salts LUBRIZOL CORP 5 Nov 1975 45926/75 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Polymers are made by polymerizing or copolymerizing novel amine salts or quaternary ammonium salts of acrylamido-alkanesulphonic acids of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted lower alkyl group and R<SP>2</SP>-R<SP>5</SP> are hydrogen atoms or substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon groups; at least two of R<SP>2</SP>-R<SP>5</SP> being other than hydrogen atoms. Polymerization is effected by the free-radical method in bulk, solution, suspension or emulsion. Examples describe the homopolymerization of the monomers and their copolymerization with dodecyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, stearyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, t-octylacrylamide, a mixture of dodecyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate, a mixture of isodecyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate and a mixture of dodecyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and hydroxymethylated diacetone acrylamide. The polymers are useful as rust-preventitive coating compositions (e.g. with xylene or xylene/ methyl isobutyl ketone as solvent), dispersants, viscosity modifiers, rust inhibitors in lubricants and for their pesticidal and intumescent properties.
