Abstract

1481872 Well-logging HUGHES TOOL CO 24 Sept 1974 41523/74 Heading G1G A borehole is logged by generating an acoustic signal in the borehole, the signal having at any one time a single dominant frequency, coupling the signal with a selected acoustical compliance having walls partially formed by a portion of the borehole, detecting characteristics of the generated signal waveform, and recording the characteristics as a function of depth of the portion. In a logging-while-drilling embodiment, mud pumped down the drill string actuates a fluidic oscillator of known type, details given, positioned just above the drill bit. The oscillator output amplitude and/or frequency depends on the compliance of a cavity defined by the borehole wall portion between the bit and the oscillator; hence it depends on the earth formation type and the condition of the wall. The acoustic signal is sensed at the earth surface by a transducer coupled with the drill string or mud, or by summing the outputs of surface geophones. The sensed signal is recorded and is compared visually or automatically with a reference signal. Alternatively the logging may be done in a ready-drilled hole, using another known type of acoustic source.
