Abstract
1481771 Nitrous oxide SOUTH AFRICAN INVENTIONS DEVELOPMENT CORP 21 Jan 1975 [30 Jan 1974] 2556/75 Heading C1A Nitrous oxide is prepared by the decomposition of NH 4 <SP>+</SP> and NO 3 <SP>-</SP> ions in a strongly acid aqueous medium in a continuous process comprising the steps (i) supplying sources of NH 4 + and NO 3 <SP>-</SP> ions to the reactor, (ii) maintaining the reaction mixture at the boiling point, which is above 80‹ C., (iii) distilling out the water formed in the reaction (which also contains N 2 O, HNO 3 and HCl) into a fractionation space within which reflux conditions prevail, (iv) producing an overhead condensate consisting essentially of water from the fractionation system of (iii), part of which is removed and discarded, and part of which is reformed to the fractionation space so as to maintain the reflux, (v) recovering HCl and HNO 3 as aqueous solutions as bottoms liquor in the fractionation system of (iii) and (vi), removing overhead from the fractionation system of (iii) the nitrous oxide in a form essentially depleted of HNO 3 and HCl.
