Abstract
1481568 Preparation of alkylphenols CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 13 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 39979/74 Heading C2C A liquid phase reaction for the preparation of an alkylphenol comprises a first step in which an olefin of 6 to 12 carbon atoms and a phenol are passed at a temperature of 80‹ to 120‹ C. over a catalyst comprising a strongly acid ion-exchanger disposed in a fixed bed and having an exchange capacity of 50 to 95 meq./100 ml. of ion exchanger and a second stage in which, at a temperature of 110‹ to 130‹ C., the material from the first step is passed over a catalyst comprising a strongly acid ion exchanger disposed in a fixed bed and having an exchange capacity of 100 to 180 meq./100 ml. of catalyst. Sulphonated ion-exchange resins in the H form, for example based on polystyrene or based on phenolformaldehyde resins in a fixed bed may conveniently be employed as catalysts. (Note: The quoted exchange capacity gives the number of equivalents of H ions/100 ml. of ion exchanger (measured in water moist state) which can be exchanged by other cations).
