Abstract

1480956 Shock absorber piston valves; valves JONAS WOODHEAD Ltd 1 Aug 1974 34033/74 Headings F2S and F2V A shock absorber comprises a working cylinder 1, a piston 7 which is slidable in the working cylinder and is provided with a passage 26 extending from one side to the other of the piston, and a valve 12 arranged to control fluid flow through the passage, the valve comprising a generally annular valve disc 20 which is resiliently biased against one side of the piston to close the passage 26 and is bodily movable away from the piston to open the passage, the resilient biasing of the valve disc 20 being provided by a spring 22 which acts through an intermediate member 21, with the engagement between the spring and the intermediate member being radially inward of the engagement between the intermediate member and the valve disc, and the arrangement being such that, when the valve disc 20 has moved bodily away from the piston, there are two distinct flow paths from the passage to a point in the cylinder on the side of the valve disc remote from the piston, one path passing around the outer periphery of the valve disc and the other through the central opening 23, Fig. 2. There are three passages 26 connected by an annular groove 25. The valve disc 20 has three lobes 24, Fig. 2, which centre it. The inner diameter of the annular portion of the valve disc is chosen so as not to block the flow on rebound to passages 18 and a valve 13. The spring 22 biasing the valve disc 20 is seated between a rebound stop 29 and the slidable dished intermediate member 21 which has apertures 28 to allow passage of fluid which has flowed through the central opening 23 of the valve disc 20. The shock absorber may be of double- or multi-tube type.
