Abstract

1480347 Measuring temperature UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 27 Nov 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 55280/73 Heading G1A [Also in Division G6] Temperature of an object is measured by attaching thereto a sensing element consisting of a M÷ssbauer source, i.e. excited atoms of a radioactive element dispersed through a suitable matrix material, in juxta-position with a M÷ssbauer absorber, i.e. unexcited atoms of the daughter element of the excited atoms in the source dispersed in the same matrix material as that of the source, and monitoring the changes in the γ-ray flux from the sensing element. In a particular sensing element, the source comprises <SP>5 7</SP>CO and the absorber <SP>5 7</SP>Fe, both dispersed in a matrix of Pd or Rh. They may be in the form of foils of 0À001" thickness. In the manufacture of such an element a layer of <SP>5 7</SP>Fe is deposited electrolytically on to both sides of a Pd or Rh foil, the foil heated to allow diffusion of the <SP>5 7</SP>Fe into it, a layer of matrix material deposited on to one surface of the first foil, followed by a layer of <SP>5 7</SP>CO and final heating to diffuse the <SP>5 7</SP>CO into that second layer. In the measurement of a turbine blade temperature, the sensing element is mounted on to the rear face thereof and the γ-ray flux issuing from the absorber surface monitored via a window by a proportional counter. The M÷ssbauer fraction f, that fraction of γ-ray emission which passes through the lattice undisturbed by nuclear (lattice) recoil, is dependent on temperature and the intensity of the emitted γ-rays from the sensing element vanes monotonically therewith.
