1480346 Assembling recessed tools TUBE WINDING (PAPER) CO Ltd 14 Nov 1974 [21 Nov 1973] 54062/73 Heading B8T Apparatus for assembling a preferably fibre-board recessed lid, having a tray 31 fitting in a cylindrical ring 30, comprises means for applying a strip of adhesive to the inner face of the ring and means for inserting the tray, tray walls foremost, into the ring a sufficient distance for the outer face of the wall of the tray to contact the adhesive. Adhesive is applied through an applicator 36 fed from a source 38 to the inner face of the ring by rotating the ring 30 on a rotating wheel 33, with ring and wheel axes horizontal, a freely rotating pressure roller 35 contacting the inner face of the ring. The applicator 36 and roller 35 are respectively mounted on blocks 39 and 40 which can be moved upwards on supports 41 and 42 so that the ring can be removed from the wheel (Fig. 3). The ring is then transferred via a shoot to a circular indexing plate 17 with preferably six equi-spaced identical circular apertures lying equidistant from the centre of the plate, the ring being pressed into the collar 32 surrounding an aperture. A tray 31 is simultaneously fed to the other side of the plate 17 and is pushed by pusher plate 13 through guide ring 47, which has a convergent circular inner cross-section to reduce the outside diameter of the leading edge of tray 31 to that of the aperture and inner face of ring 30. Pusher plate 12 holds ring 30 in the collar 32 as the tray wall is inserted in the ring to contact the adhesive (Fig. 6). An indexing gear-box, which actuates all the ancillary equipment associated with the indexing plate, now removes plates 12 and 13 and rotates the indexing plate through 60 degrees from the first stage to the second stage of assembly where the adhesive is allowed to dry while another ring and tray are assembled in the aperture now in the first stage. At the third stage, after a further 60 degree rotation, a pressure plate supports the base of the tray and, in the collar side of the indexing plate, a heated forming head moves to contact the projecting portion of the ring to turn it over and inwards to form a bead 53. After rotation through 180 degrees, an ejector plate 16 moves in the direction of arrow 54 (Fig. 8) to eject the completed lid from the indexing plate.
