Abstract

1479700 Automatic control of moulding FEDERAL MOGUL CORP 10 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973 23 May 1974] 39528/74 Heading G3N A moulding press is automatically opened under computer control when the cure of the material being moulded is calculated to be complete in dependence upon the temperature of the mould cavity. In an example, a digital computer stores data relating to a mould arrangement and to a rubber or synthetic elastomer compound being moulded, so that it can calculate the required cure time in accorcance with the Arrhenius equation relating the logarithm of the cure time to the moulding temperature. In operation a timer starts when the mould is closed, and the instantaneous temperature of the interior of the mould is continuously supplied to the computer which repeatedly calculates and recalculates the required cure time. When the actual elapsed time reaches the instantaneous calculated time, the computer causes the mould to be opened automatically. The computer also ensures that the mould temperature is kept within a desired range by proportional control of heaters. A further embodiment is described in which a series of moulds are controlled independently and simultaneously by the computer.
