1479555 Luminescent compositions A B DICK CO 27 Oct 1975 [4 Nov 1974] 44150/75 Heading C4S A fluorescent jet printing ink comprises an organic solvent in which an organic phosphor, a fluorescent dye and an organic binder are dissolved; a second dye; a brightener and an ionizable salt, e.g. K thiocyanate to reduce resistivity; an evaporation retardant may be added, the organic phosphor may be a third dye. Dyes may be heterocyclic phenols alimido benzothiozols, xylene, rhodamine, azosol and sulphoflavine. The dyes are dissolved in a sulphonamide - formaldehyde condensation resin which is ground to powder when it sets. The powder dissolves in the ink solvent whereby the resin provides the binder. Other binders include toluene sulphonamide resin, celluloses, acrylic polymers, butyrates, polyamide resins and shellac. Solvents include acetone alcohols, acetates, glycols, ketones and organic chlorides. Many examples of aliphatic polyol evaporation retardants are given including ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Other retardants include phthalate, sebacate, citrate, adipate and rosin esters. The inks contain 0À1-3À0% by wt. of phosphor, up to 5% brightener, up to 60% binder and up to 2% dye; the viscosity is 1 to 20 centipoise. The ink may be used in electrostatic, flexographic and gravure printing of polyolefin, metal, wood, glass and paper surfaces.
