Abstract
1479453 Drying cables BICC Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [6 July 1973] 32307/73 Heading F4G The invention relates to an apparatus for and a method of drying the insulation of insulated electric conductors. The apparatus comprises an evacuable chamber 3 for housing the conductor and an ionization gauge 8 for monitoring the gases present in the chamber 3 or in a sampling chamber 9 communicable with the chamber 3, the -gauge 8 being sensitive to the partial pressure or total pressure of each of a number of gases present in the evacuable and/or sampling chamber and being capable of producing an output signal corresponding thereto. The chamber 3 is evacuated through a pipe which incorporates a valve 4. The sampling chamber 9 is evacuated by a diffusion pump 11 for which the backing vacuum is maintained by a rotary pump 19 or by being connected back to the chamber 3 (Fig. 2, not shown). The drying is controlled by a process control unit 14 which receives signals by way of a control unit 12 and scanning unit 13 from the gauge 8. The process control unit 14 is provided with a visual read out. Pressure sensitive switches 5 and 18 operate isolation valves 6 and 17 in the event of a system failure.
