Abstract

1479024 Articulated vehicles; road vehicle suspensions ETABS JEAN NICHOLAS & FILS 5 Aug 1974 34404/74 Headings B7H and B7D The load capacity of a tractor-trailer vehicle comprising a tractor and a semi-trailer is increased by providing the tractor and/or the semi-trailer with an extension module 11, which has a suspension of lower stiffness than the tractor or semi-trailer and is connected to the tractor or semi-trailer frame so as to be allowed relative pivotal movement about a vertical axis but not about a horizontal axis. In Figs. 1, 2 the extension module 11 has a chassis frame 15 which is connected to the frame 14 of a semi-trailer 10 by a pivot pin 22 passing through interleaved lugs 18, 19 and 20, 21 on the respective frames 14, 15. The semi-trailer 10 has two rows of paired oscillating axles mounted on walking beams 12, and the extension module 11 has a pair of oscillating axles mounted on swinging arms 16 having hydraulic suspension cylinders 17 which are connected through valves 35, 35<SP>1</SP> to either or both of two hydraulic accumulators 33, 33<SP>1</SP> to provide three possible spring rates. A pump 36 is manually operable for adjusting the mean height of the suspension cylinders 17. Fluid from the pump 36 can alternatively be directed through a valve 39 to hydraulic cylinders 25 connected between the extension module 10 and the semi-trailer 11 for effecting enforced turning or locking of the module relative to the semitrailer during reversing operations. Adjustable support legs 23 are provided at the rear corners of the frame of the extension module 11 for supporting the module when detached from the semi-trailer 10. Similar ears 26, 27 are provided of the extension module 11 and the semi-trailer 10 for the attachment of elevatable loading ramps 25a. The effective length of the semitrailer 10 may be increased by a plate 29 which has a flange 30 received in a channel at the rear of the semi-trailer and bears through an arcuate area of low-friction material on the extension module 11. In Fig. 4 (not shown) an extension module is attached to the rear of a tractor towing a semi-trailer, and in Fig. 7 (not shown) both tractor and semi-trailer are provided with an extension module.
