Abstract
1478254 Automatic exchange systems INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 1 July 1975 [9 July 1974] 27684/75 Heading H4P An automatic telecommunication exchange includes registers, one of which is seized for use for each call set up by a subscriber, and a junction over which outgoing calls are extended to a remote exchange; if a predetermined period elapses without the receipt of a call confirmation signal from the remote exchange, the seized register makes a number of attempts for a preset period to complete the call over the same junction, but if these attempts fail a commonly available test circuit is seized and connected to the junction, whereafter the register is disconnected from that junction and thus becomes available for other calls. The test circuit then emits a succession of signals over the junction in an attempt to stimulate a response from the remote exchange; if these attempts succeed, indicating that the initial failure of the call confirmation signal to arrive was due to a transient fault, the junction and the test circuit are both released. If, however, after a predetermined period no response is received the junction is set to its alarm condition in which it is unavailable for use and is signalled as faulty, the test circuit then being released.
