1477825 Polymer-supported Ziegler catalysts INST NEFTEKHIMICHE SINTEZA I AV TOPCHIEVA AKAD NAUK SSSR and VSESOJUZ NI I PROEKT INST NEFTEPER ER ABATYVA JUSCHEI I NEFTEKHIMICHES PROMYSHLENNOSTI 19 July 1974 [24 July 1973] 32043/74 Headings C3P and C3E A catalyst component (a), for use in conjunction with organometallic compounds (b) in the polymerization of ethylene, α-monoolefins, or dienes, is obtained by reacting a transition metal compound with a rubbery material containing electron-donor and/or electron-acceptor groups to obtain a gel which is insoluble but swellable in a hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon medium. The initial rubber reactant may be in a cross-linked gel form or the gel structure may be formed in situ during the bonding reaction with the transition metal compound. The polymerization processes may include the step of recycling the catalyst. Examples refer to the polymerization of butadiene, ethylene, ethylenepropylene, vinylcyclohexane, propylene, isoprene, using (a)reaction products of (C 5 H 5 ) 2 TiCl 2 , TiCl 4 , nickelacetylacetonate, VCl 4 , TiCl 4 and Al(iBu)3,(C 5 H 5 ) 2 TiCl 2 and Al(iBu) 2 Cl, VO(OEt) 3 , Ti(OBu) 3 Cl, Mg, PrCl and TiCl 4 , or VCl 4 and Ni(C 5 H 7 O 2 ) 2 , on cross-linked graft polymers of vinyl pyridine, allyl alcohol, methyl methacrylate, diethylaminoethylmethacrylate or methacrylic acid on an ethylene-propyleneethylidenenorbornene terpolymer, a cross-linked graft polymer of vinyl diphenylphosphine on an ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene terpolymer, a cross-linked graft polymer of vinyl pyridine on a polysiloxane containing unsaturated groups, natural rubber or 1,2-polybutadiene, and (b) Al - (cyolohexenylethyl) 2 Cl, iBu 3 Al, iBu 2 AlCl or (C 7 H 15 ) 3 Al.
